What "research grade" really means
"Research grade" is not a regulated term, which is why the phrase alone tells you almost nothing. What matters is the supporting data behind a vial: the documented purity, the identity confirmation, and whether an independent lab - not the seller - produced those numbers. A genuine research-grade peptide ships with a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis (CoA) you can match to the lot number on your vial. If a supplier can only offer a generic, undated certificate that never changes between batches, treat that as a red flag rather than reassurance.
Reading an HPLC report and a Certificate of Analysis
High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) is the standard method for measuring peptide purity. The report shows a chromatogram where the main peak represents your target peptide and smaller peaks represent impurities or truncated sequences. A purity figure of 98% means 98% of the measured material corresponds to that main peak. Mass spectrometry (often listed alongside HPLC on a CoA) confirms the peptide's molecular weight, verifying you received the sequence you ordered rather than a similar-looking compound. When you request a CoA, check three things: the lot number matches your vial, the test date is recent, and the issuing laboratory is named. Numbers without a named lab and a matching lot are marketing, not verification.
EU shipping, storage and customs realities
Lyophilized (freeze-dried) peptides are stable at room temperature for short transit windows, which is why reputable EU suppliers ship from within the single market rather than from overseas. Intra-EU shipments avoid the customs delays, import duties and seizure risk that come with parcels crossing external borders - a practical advantage that matters more for research continuity than most buyers expect. Be cautious of suppliers who make therapeutic or dosing claims - that is both a regulatory red flag and a sign they are not operating in a research context. Equally, vague "premium" or "pharmaceutical" language with no documentation behind it signals marketing over substance. The strongest signal is simple: ask for a batch-specific CoA before you order and see whether you receive one.
